Report Elimu On Line Workshop 'Internet for Education'
8.1 Presentation Group
I - technical cluster

This group utilised maigizo very well to liven up their presentation.  One of the group members played the part of a student beginning to learn the basics of internet study while one of the other members played the part of the computer teacher.
1 Problem: The student lamented about the prevalence of frequent pop ups on her computer.  The pop ups are oft times advertisements for porn sites.  There was also discussion about possible viruses and spy ware
Solution: The group presented the following possible solutions:
1.
Acquire donations of software to deal with the problem
2.
Download free software to deal with the problem
3.
Acquire software to protect the computer
2 Problem: The student demonstrated in the maigizo how she was busy working on a project and as happens frequently, the umeme cut off!  There was also discussion about the dangers of electrical surges.
Solution: The group presented the following possible solutions:
1.
      Acquire surge protectors and stabilisers
2.
      Acquire UPS if possible
3.
      Battery back up systems
4.
Explore alternative power supply sources (e.g. bio-gas and solar)
3 Problem: The student “found” spilled food and even a bone lodged in the keyboard! This was the cue for a discussion about the importance of computer maintenance.
Solution: 1.     Training for preventative maintenance*
2.     Have a schedule for “pm” (preventative maintenance)

*
note that both UAACC and A&A volunteered to conduct classes on “pm”
4 Problem: The student demonstrated how the speed of the connection sometimes poses a real problem when it is very slow.
Solution: 1.     It was suggested that the computer users monitor the time of usage (i.e. wait until late in the evening to use the internet as there are fewer users and the speed of connecting to the various sites will dramatically increase.)
2.    The group also advised to contact the Internet Service provider (ISP) to see if the slow connection might be because of another problem.
